Durban - the playground of the Zulu Kingdom
The second largest metropolitan area in South Africa, Durban is regarded as South Africa's favourite playground for the domestic tourist. Its cosmopolitan nature and numerous attractions ensure that its appeal to the visitor is increasing. While in Durban, the following should definitely be considered:
Cato Manor - an exciting new urban development node near the city centre with a unique story of forced removals and development under a Presidential Lead Project.
Overnight in Umlazi Township - or in a number of homestays throughout the city to get to know the urban residents on a more personal basis.
Inanda Heritage Route - including Ohlange Institute, Phoenix settlement of Ghandi, Inanda Seminary and Ebuhleni, place of Shembe church. Let the local guides at the various attractions along this route give you historical insights into these significant cultural heritage sites.
uShaka Marine World - Durban's most exciting tourist development - opening at the end of April 2004, it is one of the 10 largest aquariums in the world.
City tour - experience Durban's mix of cultures and zones on a city tour that includes the harbour, city centre, Indian Market and some hidden spots in the suburbs, such as the Durban Botanic Gardens and the NSA Art Gallery.
Beachfront - Durban's Golden Mile is home to an internationally recognised Blue Flag beach and is often the centre of a number of exciting events during the school holidays.
Spend the day in the Valley of 1000 Hills - enjoying sweeping views, as well as a variety of shopping opportunities along this cultural route.
Isithumba Adventure Village - also in the Valley of 1000 Hills, is a worthwhile cultural visit - it is set amongst rural villages set against magnificent mountain vistas and the Umgeni River.
